Spectroscopic confirmation of clusters from the ESO imaging survey
We measure redshifts for 67 galaxies in the field of six cluster candidates from the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS). The cluster candidates are selected in the EIS patches C and D among those with estimated mean redshifts 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.7. The observations were made with EFOSC2 at the 3.6m ESO telescope. In the six candidate cluster fields, we identify 19 possible sets of 2 to 7 galaxies in redshift spa...
متن کاملSpectroscopic analysis of sdB stars from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey
We report on the analysis of high-resolution optical spectra for 77 subdwarf B (sdB) stars from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey. Effective temperature, surface gravity, and photospheric helium abundance are determined simultaneously by spectral line profile fitting of hydrogen and helium lines, and are found to be in agreement with previous studies of sdB stars. 24 objects show spectral ...
متن کاملEarly Results of the Eso Vlt
The results of the FORS and ISAAC Science Verification of the FORS and ISAAC instruments at the VLT ANTU/UT1 are described. The following observations have been carried out: 1) the Cluster Deep Field MS1008.1-1224 2) the Antlia dwarf spheroidal Galaxy 3) multiple Object Spectroscopy of Lyman break galaxies in the AXAF and Hubble Deep Field South 4) ISAAC IR Spectroscopy of a gravitationally mag...
متن کاملThe ESO nearby Abell cluster survey
We have used the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS) in combination with the Cosmos Galaxy Catalogue, to investigate the existence of a Fundamental Plane (FP) for rich clusters of galaxies. The 20 clusters with the most regular projected galaxy distributions appear to define a quite narrow FP, which is similar to the FP found by Schaeffer et al., who used other clusters. Our cluster FP appe...
متن کاملESO Imaging Survey: Finding Targets for VLT
Data from the wide-angle, moderately deep ESO Imaging Survey have been used to produce target lists for the first year of the VLT. About 250 candidate clusters of galaxies have been identified from the I−band images covering ∼ 17 square degrees. In addition, using the multicolor data available over an area of 1.3 square degrees over 300 potentially interesting point-sources have been selected. ...
